A return trip aboard “Murder on the Orient Express”

A return trip aboard “Murder on the Orient Express”

The Sidney Lumet movie “Murder on the Orient Express” was a huge hit back in 1974. This morning, with Seth Doane as conductor, we have a ticket to a remake:

Whether it’s the baby grand piano, white table-cloths and fine china, or the art-deco details, it’s clear this is no ordinary train. It’s the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, made up of historic 1920s carriage reminiscent of the legendary train dating back to the 1800s, which transported passengers between Paris and Istanbul in very high style.

“It is incredible,” said James Pritchard. If his name is not recognizable, his great-grandmother’s certainly is: Agatha Christie.

“I probably feel as close to my great-grandmother at this point as I ever have,” Pritchard said. “You can feel what she must’ve felt.

An avid traveler, Christie was a regular on the Orient Express, which she called “the train of her dreams.”

No wonder it was the setting for her most famous tale of murder.

Pritchard said, “I think when you walk along these carriages you can imagine the way of life. .You can kind of see how her imagination is developed. ”

Christie’s imagination and ability to paint pictures of her novels, 150+ short stories, and more than 20 plays.

Perhaps none is more beloved than “Murder on the Orient Express.” It has been told and re-told several times. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in the latest film adaptation.

“She’s such a master at laying out, in this case, very, very fascinating, interesting group of characters,” Branagh said.

That made Branagh’s job of directing and casting the film all the more interesting.

He may be a towering figure in Hollywood, but he was dwarfed next to the hulking train he had built for his movie. “We want it very much to be away from friendly trains, you know, the world of Thomas the Tank Engine and all the rest of it,” Branagh said.

Ta-Nehisi Coates wants readers to be “haunted” by his work

Author and essayist Ta-Nehisi Coates with correspondent Martha Teichner.
Critically-acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates has earned a huge following, along with several prestigious awards, for his thought-provoking books dealing with race. He does not want people to simply read the books; Martha Teichner in an interview for CBS ‘”Sunday Morning,” to be broadcast November 5.

“I try to write in a way that makes people feel things,” Coates tells Teichner. “I do not want them to read what I’m writing and say, ‘I think that’s right’ and agree with me. I want them to read something and then walk away and be haunted by it.”

Coates’ latest book, “We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy,” became an instant bestseller. And “Between the World and Me,” a letter to his son about the hazards of being a black male in the US, won the National Book Award in 2015. That same year, he was awarded a so-called MacArthur “genius grant. ”

Coates tells Teichner his initial audience is himself. “Secondly, it’s probably a young African-American kids who came up like me.”

He grew up in Baltimore, surrounded by both violence and books. His father, Paul Coates, a one-time Black Panther, published books by forgotten African-American writers from an office in his basement and also worked as a research librarian at Howard University. Ta-Nehisi Coates went on to study there, and spent a lot of time in the library. Today, his writing is required or recommended reading at least 400 schools and colleges.

“My job is to look out on that world that I write about and be as honest as I possibly can about that world,” he tells Teichner. “If that’s optimistic and uplifting, OK. If it’s not, OK.”

Uber passenger recalls ride with Sayfullo Saipov days before NYC attack

NEW YORK – Damian Erskine, a 34-year-old British graphic designer, came to the United States with his girlfriend last weekend to attend a friend’s wedding in New York. Little did the couple know that the Uber they ordered Oct. 26 from Newark International Airport would be driven by Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov – the man who is now facing federal terrorism charges for killing at least eight people with a rented pickup truck in lower Manhattan on Halloween.

Saipov was registered as a driver for both Uber and Lyft.

Erskine described Saipov as “very friendly” and “a perfectly normal guy.” He said Saipov took the bags from Erskine’s girlfriend (who declined to be interviewed) Toyota Minivan – where the truck for the attack was rented.

A look at Saipov and the Uber route he took for Erskine and his girlfriend. CBS NEWS
Saipov was chatty during the ride, which lasted more than an hour on the way to Rockaway in New Jersey. He talked about real estate prices in Manhattan versus London and spoke admiringly about Range Rovers, saying he hoped to own one someday, Erskine recalled. Saipov disclosed that he was also a truck driver and mentioned a trip where he drove from New Jersey to California.

Erskine thought he seemed “totally, totally normal.”

“You get a vibe from someone … there is definitely something that seems to be there,” Erskine said.

Erskine says Saipov did not mention religion or politics during the ride ride and that he was not critical of the United States in any way. They did not talk about where Saipov was from or how long he had lived in America. Erskine thought Saipov spoke very good English with not much of an accent.

The couple returned to the U.K. on the morning of Oct. 31 – the same day as the deadly rampage in lower Manhattan.

“The day we landed was what we had in the World Trade Center,” Erskine said. “It’s a really weird feeling.”

It was not until Wednesday, after watching coverage on BBC News, that it was not an hour in a car with the suspect. He checked his Uber receipt and confirmed the name was a match. He says he contacted U.S. authorities in Britain and reported his experience to investigators.

He remains shaken by the close encounter with a man government say bragged about killing people in the name of ISIS.

“When people talk about radicalization and that kind of thing … it’s that ability to live a normal life, when how much is an act,” Erskine said. “But what is it that makes transition from being the friendly polite person to being the murderer? That transition should be the focus.”

Erskine said that he physically felt sick after learning of the attack that left two Americans, five Argentines and a Belgian dead.

“Just repulsion really,” Erskine said. “You think, was there anything you might have a flag?” I know there was not. That’s the worst part … you could have done anything because you could have made a phone call. ”

“I could spend the next week dwelling on the ‘what ifs’ and ‘hows,'” he said. “It’s not going to change anything.”

Residents mind the cracks in the basement walls of the Millennium Tower and wonder how far their homes and their property values will sink

As the cracks in its basement walls slowly widen, a visual clue to the slow sinking of the 645-ft. skyscraper, the residents of Millennium Tower file lawsuits and wonder how far their homes – and their investments in these homes – will sink. Jon Wertheim went to San Francisco to report on the building that’s become the most infamous in the city’s skyline for a 60 Minutes story to be broadcast Sunday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT.

Since its foundation was poured in 2006, the Millennium has sunk 17 inches and tilted 14 inches to the northwest. The posh residence was once touted as the city’s bestsellers and ibs of the likes of tech titans and the city’s former pro quarterback, Joe Montana. Pat and Jerry Dodson were enthusiastic buyers. They tell Wertheim they were euphoric over their new home until the news broke about the sinking. Jerry, a lawyer and engineer, now makes a daily trip to the basement to check on the spread of cracks in the walls. “There’s enough of them, a spider web of cracks … that you have to be concerned about what’s going on underneath … I’ve been told by structural and geotechnical engineers that I should be watching.”

The trouble at the Millennium Tower has spawned numerous lawsuits – to which there are some 20 parties so far. But some residents have already sold their units. “We do not know if this building is going to stand up in an earthquake,” says Frank Jernigan. “And so I became severely frightened of that.” His husband, Andrew Faulk, adds, “We just left,” he tolds Wertheim. They say they lost between 3 and 4 million dollars when they sold their apartment earlier this year. “We sold it for about half of what it was valued at before the news came to light,” says Jernigan.

Millennium Tower was built to code, but some engineers now say that because the building is made of concrete and heavier than a steel building, its foundation should have been driven deeper, all the way to bedrock, to prevent sinking. An interesting array of suggestions about how to fix the towers have been floated around town; they include freezing the ground beneath in perpetuity or lopping off the top 20 floors to decrease its weight. More likely, say engineers, the foundation will have to be strengthened by new piles that reach down to bedrock.

While the tech-fueled building boom in San Francisco continues unabated and “bedrock” has become the new watchword to developers. In an ironic reference to Millennium’s troubles, tech giant Salesforce, whose headquarters was recently completed across the street, proudly tweeted that it was resting on “Bedrock Baby!”

BRUSSELS – Brussels prosecutors said Sunday that ousted Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and four ex-regional ministers were taken into custody to start the process of their possible extradition to Spain.

The five presented themselves to the federal police at around 9 a.m. (3 a.m. ET), Brussels prosecutor’s office spokesman Gilles Dejemeppe. He said that they have not been arrested and that Puigdemont and the four members of his disbanded Cabinet will be heard by an investigative judge later in the day.

The Belgian judge will have to decide within 24 hours of what separatist politicians wanted in Spain on suspicion of independence for the northeastern Catalonia in violation of Spain’s Constitution.

Dejemeppe said the judge’s options range from “refusal to execute the European arrest, arresting the people involved, releasing them on conditions or under bail.” He said if they are arrested then they will be sent to jail as the extradition process continues. Dejemeppe said that the whole process from arrest to extradition, could take more than 60 days.

That delay could give Puigdemont time to participate, albeit from afar and in largely a symbolic capacity, in the regional snap election called by Spain’s government for Catalonia on Dec. 21.

A senior official of Puigdemont’s party, the center-right Democratic Party of Catalonia, said on Sunday that the party wanted Puigdemont to repeat as its candidate. Spanish government spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo has said that any politician can run in the election unless he has been convicted of a crime.

Puigdemont and the four ex-ministers fled to Belgium as part of an extraordinary crackdown to the region’s illegal secession claim.

A Spanish National Court judge issued a suspicion of five crimes, including rebellion, sedition and embezzlement, on Friday, a day after the same judge sent another former Catalan Cabinet members to jail without bail while her investigation continues. A ninth spent a night in jail and was freed after posting bail.

Puigdemont wrote in Dutch in his Twitter account on Saturday that he was “prepared to fully cooperate with Belgian justice following the European arrest warrant issued by Spain.”

Puigdemont’s lawyer in Brussels has already said that his client plans to fight extradition to Spain without requesting political asylum.

Political forces in Catalonia are hurryly jockeying for position to start a campaign that promises to be as bitter as it is decisive to Spain’s worst institutional crisis in nearly four decades.

Former U.S. prosecutors: Despite White House statements, Russian probe is just beginning
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insists that she expects Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election “to conclude soon,” after two indictments were handed down and a guilty plea was filed on Monday.

However, two former U.S. prosecutors are saying those developments suggest the very opposite: That things are just getting going.

Commentary: Do not get your hopes up about Mueller
“We are at the beginning,” former Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Myers Wood told CBS News Chief White House correspondent Major Garrett and political director Steve Chaggaris on this week’s episode of “The Takeout.”

Listen to this episode on Stitcher
“We’re at the bottom of the second inning of a long game,” Wood’s husband, former U.S. Attorney John Wood added.

“I think that people at the White House ought to be nervous. ”

Meanwhile, President Trump insists that he’s not the target of Mueller’s investigation and that Monday’s charges “have nothing to do with us.” He told the New York Times Wednesday, “I do not even investigate, as you know.

But, John Wood points out, “We do not know if he’s being investigated,” adding that because Mueller’s team has not leaked very much to reporters, there’s a lot we do not know about the investigation. And if the president is not being investigated, that does not mean he will not be roped into the investigation itself, Wood said.

“In terms of whether the president will have to testify, my guess would be that he will end up testifying in some form. up being a witness to something that would be of interest concerning the campaign. “
